It is classified into three categories based on its installation. The first type is sound card on board. It is directly installed in the computer’s motherboard. The second type is sound card offboard. The installation of this card is in the ISA/PCI slot of the motherboard. The last is sound card external. How does it work?

When you listen to a voice from this hardware, the voice of data digital in waveform including wav and mp3 is transferred to sound card. This digital data is processed by Digital Signal Processing (DSP) with Digital Analog Converter (DAC) which coverts the digital signal into an analog signal. This analog signal is then amplified and emitted through the speaker.

Meanwhile, when you record a voice through a microphone, the analog sound is processed by the DSP with Analog Digital Converter (ADC). The analog signal is then converted into digital signal. This signal is then saved in waveform table format in a disk or it is compressed into another format such as mp3.
